The USS Leary is the second destroyer to be so named.The first Leary was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean by a German submarine on Dec.24, 1943.This Leary,built in Orange,Texas by the Consolidated Steel Corp, and launched on January 20, 1945,commissioned on May 7, 1945 is her successor.Both destroyers were named after Lieutenant Clarence F.Leary USNR,Executive Officer of the USS Charlton Hall.On July 20,1918 when a fire started on the Charlton Hall ,Lt Leary entered the burning hold in an effort to save the burning ship and her crew. He died as a result of burns and smoke inhalation. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. His courage and devotion to duty in sacrificing his life for his USS LEARY DD shipmates will be an inspiration to all who may sail in this vessel.
